Providing
Safe Water
for Children
Thanks to your generous support, life-saving clean water and essential health and hygiene training are being provided to hundreds of thousands of children across nine countries.
School Water Filters
Unclean Water Endangers Children’s Lives
Every day, millions of children have no option but to drink contaminated water at school. It causes them to fall ill with diarrhea or typhoid. More than 443 million school days are lost among children as a result, and over 1,000 children under age five die daily from these preventable waterborne diseases. Unclean water robs children of their futures.
However, Samaritan’s Purse and generous donors like you are responding in Jesus’ Name by providing water filters in schools around the world.
BioSand Water Filters Save Lives
Clean water protects children and their futures
Your gift for clean water can provide tanks, filters, latrines, hygiene training, and other essential measures to protect water sources and prevent the spread of disease as we seek to meet physical and spiritual needs in the Name of Jesus.
Through safe water, sanitation, and hygiene support, children can stay healthy, remain in school, and look ahead to a brighter future. At the same time, Christian partners have the opportunity to share the hope of the Gospel with students and families.
- Since 1998, gifts like yours have provided filters at over 530 schools.
- The large school BioSand Filter can provide safe water to around 500 staff and students daily.
- The Canadian-invented BioSand Water Filter uses layers of sand, gravel, and naturally occurring micro-organisms to remove bacteria and parasites that make children sick.
- With clean water, school days are not missed, children thrive, and their futures remain bright.
Sara’s Story: Death to Life
God saved Sara from
the brink of death and gave her new life
Water—the very thing that was supposed to give Sara* life to play, go to school, and grow—was killing her. Less than one-third of Cambodian families have access to safe drinking water. Among them, Sara’s family had to drink from an unfiltered source that teemed with the bacteria now threatening Sara’s life.
The typhoid fever worsened. Symptoms from vomiting and diarrhea wrung Sara’s small body dry. Her parents watched helplessly as their daughter neared “the valley of the shadow of death” (Psalm 23:4).
We praise God that Sara received the care she needed. But without safe drinking water, the danger would remain—until the Lord answered that need, too. Through the prayers and support of friends like you, God opened the door for Samaritan’s Purse to construct a large BioSand Filter at Sara’s school. Now, abundant safe water is available every day for students and staff, plus the surrounding community. The team also installed latrines and hand-washing stations, teaching the children how to use the facilities to stay healthy.
“Now that health problems are no longer a concern, Sara has thrived as a student and takes pride in her education,” our partner said. “Her dream is to become a teacher in her home village.”
As God brings health to Sara’s community, He is giving opportunities to share the Gospel with students and families. Through the witness of our Christian partner, Sara—along with several of her classmates—chose to follow Jesus Christ as Savior.

Why Water Projects Matter
Join us in changing children’s lives
Healthy Habits for Life
Student-led health clubs help keep schools clean and continue promoting healthy habits among students. Girls’ Clubs provide menstrual hygiene management training that empowers girls to stay in school. As health improves, attendance soars, and futures are filled with hope.
Keeping Futures Bright
Safe water is only the beginning. Our water projects don’t stop at installing a water filter; proper hygiene and sanitation education are equally important. By installing latrines and hand-washing stations, and teaching children how to use them, it instills lifelong healthy hygiene habits.
Lives Changed for Eternity
As God brings health to schools, He also gives the opportunity to share the Gospel with students and families. Through Christian partners, students are given a Gospel presentation. Many choose to follow Jesus Christ as their Savior and go on to share the Gospel with friends and family in their community.
