Each year, over 800,000 people die from waterborne disease, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene habits. Women and girls are forced to spend hours daily walking to collect water—limiting opportunities for an education or paid work. And the cost for medicine when a child falls sick can drive a family into crushing debt. Dirty water disrupts daily life for households and robs them of stability, dignity, and a future.

- The Canadian-invented BioSand Water Filter uses layers of sand, gravel, and naturally occurring micro-organisms to remove bacteria and parasites that make families sick.
- The filters purify enough water for an entire family’s daily needs. Families also receive hygiene training to help create a healthy home.
- Since 1998, gifts like yours have provided more than 306,000 homes with a water filter.
‘The Love of Jesus is Also for them’
Life-saving filters bring hope in a remote Filipino village
Like moms around the world, Katrina dreams of the best for her children. She wants her two sons to be healthy, go to school, and get good jobs as adults. But where she lives in the southern Philippines, that hope was threatened every day.
A contaminated spring—their only source of water—brought terrible bouts of illness into their lives. “I got worried, especially because we have so little,” Katrina said. “If we have a challenge like sickness in our children, we must look for ways to find money so we can buy medicine.”
Those medical expenses weighed heavily on Katrina. She and her husband earn barely enough for their family to survive, and there is little money left for emergencies.
That’s why a water filter has meant so much to Katrina and her family. After learning of one particularly bad diarrhea outbreak last year, a Samaritan’s Purse water project worked with the local church to deliver life-saving filters in the remote community. Katrina’s eldest son expressed:
“When I drink the water, I don’t feel pain,”
God has also used these filters to open doors for our church partner—the only church in Katrina’s village—to share the Gospel.
Katrina, who gave her life to Christ four years ago, now goes door to door with the church to offer a water filter to other families.
“It’s an eye-opener for those neighbors that the love of Jesus is also for them. That’s opening conversations to share the love of the Lord,” Katrina said.

Health and Hope for Households
Proper hygiene habits help prevent the spread of disease from unclean hands or unwashed food. Our teams host hygiene workshops to train families on how to properly wash their hands, food, and dispose of waste.
Healthy Home Certification
Once a household has received a BioSand Filter and completed the required hygiene training, they receive a Healthy Home Certification. This certificate is a physical reminder of a family’s commitment to maintaining a healthy home and an opportunity to share healthy practices with neighbors and friends. Through the gift of a simple water filter, health and hope return to these households.
The Gospel in Action
As God brings health to families, He also gives the opportunity to share the Gospel. During household filter monitoring visits, our teams often share about Jesus Christ, the “living water” (John 7:38). We also work alongside beneficiaries who are passionate about sharing the Gospel. This ensures that even after distributions, a ministry presence remains in the community. Your ongoing support of these life-saving water projects actively demonstrates God’s love in action.
