RECOVERY PROGRAM

Our Approach

Disaster recovery is not a one-size-fits-all. We fill gaps, enhance community resilience, and tailor supports to empower communities and families on their road to recovery through a strengths-based approach.

Examples of our approach:

  • Physical, financial and psychosocial support through personalized case management. (From immediate care to 24 months or more for continuity and trust.)
  • Connecting people with government, organizations, churches, and community.
  • School, mental health, and wellness support.
  • Adult and senior mental health and wellness activities.
  • Church emergency preparedness.
  • Community emergency readiness supports and workshop.

DISASTER RECOVERY PROGRAM

HELPING COMMUNITIES MOVE FORWARD

Our Disaster Recovery Program emerged from the Southern Alberta floods in 2013. Since then, the program has been involved in recovery projects across Canada and has experienced short- and long-term recovery from loss, crises, and natural disasters. Over the years, the program has grown and evolved to address the needs of vulnerable Canadians such as the elderly, marginalized, and underinsured to ensure no Canadian is overlooked on their recovery journey.

Our Hands-On Services for Vulnerable Canadians:

  • People-First Support: Disaster recovery is not done to a community; it is a shared healing journey of connection, relationship, and support.
  • Strengths-Based Approach: Our staff help connect existing resources to empower both individuals and the community to take charge of their own recovery and resiliency.
  • Community-Led Collaboration: Recovery efforts and support are practical, relevant, respectful, and inclusive of local knowledge, priorities, and capacities. Our teams provide the tools and support that empower the community to shape its own path toward recovery and resiliency.
  • Resilience Building: Foster emergency readiness through building trust, connection, and practical skills. Samaritan’s Purse Canada does not build dependency; it aims leave communities more resilient and prepared to encounter the next emergency or disaster.

Jasper Disaster Response

Hope to Start Again

In Jasper, firefighting efforts successfully extinguished the flames threatening to consume Melissa’s home, but left it uninhabitable due to water damage and mold. She and her two children lived in a hotel for six months before receiving approval for temporary government housing. But without a vehicle, she had no way of moving.

Our team connected with Melissa and coordinated a volunteer team through a local church to help her move. We also gave Melissa a home essential kit containing bedsheets, dishes, a bath mat, a kettle, and many other items families need to start over. Melissa was overwhelmed with gratitude. “To be gifted things like those basics so that ... we can get started again is—I actually don’t really have words. Thank you,” she said.

DISASTER RECOVERY PROGRAM

Recovery and Resiliency

Our teams have supported many communities in recovery post-disaster. We tailor our efforts to the needs and strengths of the community to help them bounce back in resiliency and bounce forward in recovery.

Walking alongside people and communities:

  • Comox Valley, BC: This small community on Vancouver Island experienced severe flooding in January. We are working with local emergency management services to help vulnerable residents who incurred significant damage and losses to property and possessions.
  • Cowichan, BC: On New Year’s Day, an apartment fire in Cowichan left multiple families displaced, including new immigrants, low-income households, and elderly individuals. We are helping these families access the vital support and services they need to move forward.
  • Fort Vermilion, AB: In 2020, devastating floods left many homes in this northern community badly damaged. We have been transporting entire homes from vulnerable locations on the flood plain to higher elevation areas, as well as providing case management for impacted families.
  • Jasper, AB: Following the July 2024 wildfire in Jasper. many of the community’s handful of churches were on the verge of closing their doors forever. Our team is working in Jasper to encourage local believers and connect churches and their assets with the needs of their recovering community.
