Samaritan’s Purse has been invited to help residents of Comox, British Columbia, recover possessions and find support after a flood.
On Jan. 29, the Comox Valley Regional District was placed under a state of emergency following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall and significant snowpack. Local rivers rose beyond typical 100-year flood levels in some areas, impacting approximately 150 residents across multiple communities.
The state of emergency was lifted on Feb. 3, after the floodwaters receded. We praise God that no lives were lost during the flooding and no one was injured. An emotional toll has followed, as homeowners return to damaged homes and begin to process their losses. Many have lost everything, and others are facing overwhelming decisions about repairs, insurance claims, and temporary housing. Dozens of families living in an RV park in the area, were especially impacted. One little girl tearfully shared that she had lost all her toys in the flood, while another man lost his trailer and all his belongings to the flood, leaving him without a home.
At the request of the Comox Valley Regional District, Samaritan’s Purse deployed specialized recovery personnel to help these hurting residents. Our teams were able to provide home emergency kits designed to help these families rebuild some of the basics they lacked pre-flood or were lost during the flood.
“A lot of people are just in survival mode, but Jesus sees them in their plight,” said Connie Jakab, Recovery Program Manager. “We are walking alongside people on the long road to recovery, helping them know what resources are here for them and providing spiritual and emotional care.”
Through the dedication of our teams, families in the RV park community have felt seen for the first time in many years. In the coming weeks, our teams will continue to support those in need through one-on-one consultations, step-by-step recovery plans, advocating for resources and support, and providing a compassionate presence as they rebuild their lives and homes.
Will you pray for the impacted Comox community? Your prayers and support are critical to walk with them and share the hope of Jesus Christ.
