Raising Livestock, Raising Hope
Thanks to your generous support, vulnerable men, women, and families are raising sources of food and income through livestock training.
Equipping Families to Thrive
Hunger creates cycles of poverty
Growing nutritious crops isn’t always a possibility. Harsh, mountainous terrains, cold winters, or flash floods can prohibit people from growing or sustaining crops. While livestock provides an alternative opportunity for food and a secondary income, this too isn't always possible. Without the capital to start or the knowledge to protect their livestock from diseases or predators, or to grow nutritious fodder, entire herds can be lost.
However, through your support, Samaritan’s Purse is responding with hope in Jesus’ Name by providing livestock, training, and veterinary services to vulnerable families around the world to raise herds that break the cycle of generational poverty and provide lifelong hope.
Livestock Training
Generational poverty can be broken
Your gift of livestock, including cows, goats, pigs, and chickens, along with the necessary training and skills, is offering a practical hope for a sustainable future for families and communities. Each animal provides a solution to hunger, and with proper training, a new source of long-term income. Chickens provide protein-rich eggs that help children grow up healthy, while cows and goats produce milk and can be bred to sell as extra income to use for education, medical care, and other needs.
As cycles of poverty are broken, doors open to introduce families to the Good Shepherd. Jesus said: "I am the good shepherd; I know My sheep and am known by My own" (John 10:14).
- Beneficiaries receive hands-on training in natural, inexpensive ways to raise healthy livestock and grow fodder.
- Animals are provided in ways that suit regional climates, socio-economic constraints, and cultural dietary needs.
- Livestock manure can be used to enrich soil as a natural fertilizer, enhancing crop growth.
- Families who are given livestock and training will go on to gift the first offspring to another neighbor in need, creating a cycle of community support and health.
Hope for a Better Future
Cow Raising Gives Families Hope in Vietnam
In his daughter’s face, Duong* sees hope for a better future. He’s been raising her alone since she was 5-years-old.
Hoa* has grown up and is heading to university, and Duong is a proud father. But getting to this point hasn’t been easy. He’s scraped by as a motorcycle taxi driver—fighting hard to put food on the table. And he now faces the daunting task of supporting Hoa through her post-secondary education.
The opportunity to join a Samaritan’s Purse cow-raising project has given him hope for what is ahead. “I see this program as a bright start for the future,” Duong told us, his eyes welling with tears.
“Now, I have hope and a new opportunity to survive.”
Together with other community members participating in the project, Duong has undergone training in agribusiness. He’s learned not only how to raise cows but also how to manage his finances and develop a small herd that can create an ongoing income for himself and his daughter.
“When I started making wiser decisions to help send my daughter to college, she also took notice and became inspired to pursue her dreams,” Duong said. “If there were no such project, I would not be able to raise cows by myself.”
The calves that Duong raises and sells will help buy food and pay off Hoa’s tuition. Though he hasn’t been able to give her many gifts over the years, he’s working hard—with your help—to break the cycles of hunger and poverty in her life.

Why Food Projects Matter
Join us in empowering families with thriving herds
Tools and Training
Through the necessary training, including animal husbandry, disease treatment, feed preparation, and pen construction to safely house animals, families can be empowered to raise healthy herds and have a steady source of nutrition and income.
Livestock and Crops
The skills, resources, and knowledge for livestock raising often go hand in hand with growing crops. The same lessons taught to grow high-nutrient fodder for sustainable grazing can be applied to raising a variety of hearty crops. Livestock manure is a natural source of fertilizer to improve soil quality for bountiful harvests.
The Good Shepherd
As hope and health are restored to families and communities, God opens the doors to share about His Son, the Good Shepherd. Just as farmers know and protect their herds, they learn that Jesus likewise provides for His followers and watches over them. Families gifted with livestock go on to pay it forward by blessing their neighbors with crops and animals.
