Hawa wanted her Kenyan family to survive while her husband searched for work. Thanks to Samaritan’s Purse and people like you, she became a source of inspiration in her village.
With her husband unable to find steady work, Hawa wanted to do something meaningful that would help support her family in one of the most economically challenged areas in Africa: the Tana River valley in Kenya.
Learning that Samaritan’s Purse was using donations from Canadians like you to help people start businesses, Hawa came to us and we provided financial support and training to create a small boutique in her village selling women’s clothing. As part of her training, Hawa, a Muslim, also learned about the Bible and found out that in Christ’s family, men don’t have to be the sole breadwinners.
Hawa supplemented our training and support with a small loan from a cooperative residential savings group organized through Samaritan’s Purse. Then she expanded her stock, and began selling fuel to local motorcycle riders and farmers with gas-powered water pumps.
Finding success there, Hawa now had the resources to hire labour to clear and prepare her farm, which had been lying idle. She planted kale and tomatoes and reaped a bumper harvest.
All this started because generous donors provided Samaritan’s Purse with the resources to help Hawa and hundreds more in the Tana River Valley, an area burdened with poverty, a lack of food, and drought.
“Thanks to you, my life has changed for the better.”
“Who would have thought that this year I was going to be a source of inspiration in my village?” Hawa said. “I thank God that my husband has been supportive and is trying to convince the men in our village to empower their wives.
“Thanks to you (Samaritan’s Purse and its supporters), my life has changed for the better and I stand to be counted as an equal member of this wonderful community.”
We praise God for the resources He gives us and the opportunities He provides to help hurting people in Jesus’ name. But there are many, many more people in Kenya and other developing nations who need physical and spiritual help. You can answer that need that when you partner with Samaritan’s Purse. Please join us.
