Ernest’s Story

Sharing the Gospel Through Agriculture

As both a pastor and a farmer in Senegal, Pastor Ernest is in a unique position. “We share the Gospel through agriculture,” said Ernest. “That is the best tool we can have.”

Senegal sees a high level of people facing acute food insecurity and malnutrition. Thanks to a gift like yours, Samaritan’s Purse hosted an agriculture project in Ernest’s rural community. They provided seeds, tools, and training. Now, vibrant fruit trees, bean plants, and moringa plants burst from once dry ground around his church and home. Chickens and ducks also wander around contentedly. As a father, he can provide food for his family of six, and as a pastor, he is sharing the bounties of his harvests and of the Gospel with his community.

“Anyone who comes, we pray with and give a basket of food so they can share with their family,” said Ernest. “The extra they take to the market and make a little money.”

Your gifts today empower families and communities to grow safe, abundant, and nutritious food for life.

The Need

Hunger Is a Desperate Crisis

More people are going hungry. About 673 million people experienced hunger in 2024, while child malnutrition rose for the sixth consecutive year. War, extreme weather, skyrocketing food prices, and poverty drive these rises. Today, one in 10 people does not know where their next meal will come from. But God can work through you to give nourishment and hope in Jesus’ Name.

For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” — John 6:33

The Solution

You Can Answer with Hope

Samaritan’s Purse Canada is working around the world to rapidly expand food projects to meet growing hunger needs. In 25 countries, agriculture and food assistance programs are vital to helping families access tools and training to grow safe, abundant, and nutritious food not only for today but well into the future. Each project adapts to the community, culture, and climate:

  • Beneficiaries like Ernest receive hands-on training in natural, inexpensive ways to raise plentiful crops and livestock.
  • Your gifts can help provide 5,000 agricultural items (such as seed packs and tools) and 6,000 animals this year.
  • Our teams make regular visits to give families advice and support, helping 10,000 people receive training in improved agriculture this year.
  • In regions like Madagascar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Senegal, and Nicaragua, we operate school feeding programs to help students facing malnutrition.
  • Emergency food distributions are also critical to save the lives of people facing sudden and severe hunger, such as Sudanese refugees of war.

Through every food project, God opens doors to point to His Word, share the Gospel, and offer discipleship groups.

Join Us in Growing Hope

Together, We Can Break New Ground to Grow Hope over Hunger

Ernest is one of the few Christians in his village. He uses all the support he received at a Samaritan’s Purse agriculture project to share God’s love. Ernest invites the community to work with him and his family in the church garden, and they can take food whenever they need.

“We know that you have a God who loves us, and that is a testimony that you are worshiping the true God,” shared two ladies who recently gave their lives to Jesus Christ.

God can work through your prayers and gifts to overcome hunger and give hope to families in Jesus’ Name. “The valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy” (Psalm 65:13, ESV).
