Samaritan’s Purse has been invited to help residents of Comox, British Columbia, recover possessions and find support after a historic flood.
On Jan. 29, the Comox Valley Regional District was placed under a state of emergency following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall and significant snowpack. Local rivers rose beyond typical 100-year flood levels in some areas, impacting approximately 150 residents across multiple communities.
The state of emergency was lifted on Feb. 3, after the floodwaters receded. We praise God that no lives were lost during the flooding and no one was injured. An emotional toll has followed, as homeowners return to damaged homes and begin to process their losses. Many have lost everything, and others are facing overwhelming decisions about repairs, insurance claims, and temporary housing. One little girl tearfully shared that she lost all her toys in the flood, while another family of five whose home was damaged are living together in a small trailer. At the request of the Comox Valley Regional District, Samaritan’s Purse is deploying specialized recovery personnel to help these hurting residents.
“A lot of people are just in survival mode, but Jesus sees them in their plight,” said Connie Jakab, Recovery Program Manager. “We are walking alongside people on the long road to recovery, helping them know what resources are here for them and providing spiritual and emotional care.”
In the coming weeks, our teams will continue to support those in need through one-on-one consultations, step-by-step recovery plans, advocating for resources and support, and providing a compassionate presence as they rebuild their lives and homes.
Will you pray for the impacted Comox community? Your prayers and support are critical to walk with them and share the hope of Jesus Christ.
