Safe Water Projects to Save Lives | Samaritan's Purse Canada

WATER OF LIFE

Water runs powerfully throughout the Gospels. At a well in Samaria, Jesus Christ declared Himself to be Israel's long-awaited Messiah. He is the source of "living water”.

Today, in places like Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Philippines, God has opened doors for Samaritan's Purse to work in Jesus' Name to help those who are desperately thirsty or are at risk of diseases from drinking contaminated water.

'THE LOVE OF JESUS IS ALSO FOR THEM'

Like moms around the world, Katrina dreams of the best for her children. She wants her two sons to be healthy, go to school, and get good jobs as adults. But where she lives in the southern Philippines, that hope was threatened every day.

A contaminated spring—their only source of water—brought terrible bouts of illness into their lives. "I got worried, especially because we have so little," Katrina said. "If we have a challenge like sickness in our children, we must look for ways to find money so we can buy medicine."

Those medical expenses weighed heavily on Katrina. Her husband earns a small income farming, making charcoal, and completing the odd construction job. Katrina is a community health worker. Together, they earn barely enough for their family to survive, and there is little money left for emergencies.

That's why a water filter has meant so much to Katrina and her family. After learning of one particularly bad diarrhea outbreak last year, a Samaritan's Purse water project worked with the local church to deliver life-saving filters in the remote community.

Life-Saving Filters Bring Hope

Diarrhea from dirty drinking water is one of the leading causes of death for children, which is why "it is really important to have potable drinking water, because we are very far from the city—far from the hospitals," Katrina said. "It's important to have a filter like this so that the sicknesses here will be less."

Katrina loves the filter's simplicity and the way it makes the water taste. Even more, she loves seeing her family healthy and hearing her eldest son say, "When I drink the water, I don't feel any pain."

God has also used these filters to open doors for our church partner—the only church in Katrina's village—to share the Gospel.

Katrina, who gave her life to Christ four years ago, now goes door to door with the church to offer a water filter to other families. "This filter is a way that people here will also experience the love of God," she said.

Village residents who don't attend church were surprised to learn they were included in the filter program. The church also delivered Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts for the children and taught them more about who Jesus is, how to follow Him, and how to share Him with others through The Greatest Journey discipleship lessons.

"WHEN I DRINK THE WATER, I DON'T FEEL ANY PAIN.”

"It's an eye-opener for those neighbors that the love of Jesus is also for them. That's opening conversations to share the love of the Lord," Katrina said.

Please pray with us that every sip of safe water would draw Katrina's neighbors closer to Christ, and that one day they too will say, "We have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us” (1 John 4:16, ESV).

Water Filters Save Lives

Because children are the most vulnerable to diseases from contaminated water, Samaritan's Purse provided a simple, powerful water filter for Katrina's family in the Philippines. Now, through the prayers and support of friends like you, her children are healthy and protected from the illnesses that once threatened their lives.

Since 1998, Samaritan’s Purse has installed water filters at over 500 schools and in more than 300,000 homes. In Cambodia, 31,000 smaller household BioSand filters have been installed in the last 17 years. Last year, thousands of Cambodian children received access to safe water through the installation of large filters at 13 schools.

  • The Canadian-invented BioSand Water Filter uses layers of sand, gravel, and naturally occurring micro-organisms to remove bacteria and parasites that make people sick.
  • The filters require no electricity and are simple for families to maintain.
  • The BioSand Filter can reduce bacteria by 95 percent and turbidity (cloudiness) by 85 percent.
  • Filters installed decades ago still produce safe water today! Families also receive hygiene training to help create a healthy home.
  • The large school BioSand Filter can provide 225-300 staff and students with safe water daily.
  • Samaritan’s Purse also drills wells, builds reservoirs, and installs other types of filters.

Three new trash bins and an incinerator also provide ways to safely dispose of garbage and keep the school grounds clean. The incinerator is specially designed to remove garbage without compromising air quality. Samaritan’s Purse installed latrines and hand-washing stations, teaching the children to use the facilities to stay healthy.

As we work with local churches to share the gift of safe water, God opens doors to share about the “living water” (John 4:10) Jesus gives.
