On June 7, the Municipality of Minitonas-Bowsman
in western Manitoba was hit by an extreme rainfall event that dropped
approximately 148 millimeters of rain in just a few hours. The rain overwhelmed
drainage systems and led to a state of local emergency. Roads have been washed
out, critical infrastructure has been damaged, and approximately 180 homes have
experienced flooding.
Samaritan’s
Purse Canada is deploying staff, volunteers, and equipment including one of our
specially equipped Disaster Relief Units (DRU) to the region. Join us as we
share the love of Jesus by offering tangible help to residents.
Volunteers will receive an on-site orientation and will
serve with an experienced Site Leadership Team. Personal protective equipment
including Tyvek suits and N95 masks will be provided and must be worn at all
times on the worksite. All equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment
will be provided. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from Minitonas,
as well as to work sites. Once on site, meals will be provided including a
bagged lunch, snacks and bottled water.
Volunteer shifts operate Monday-Saturday from
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. All volunteers must be available to attend the orientation
on their first day beginning at 7:30 AM. To note, Sunday is a rest day for
staff and volunteers.
Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age, and youth ages 14-15 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian/grandparent unless apart of a youth group. Youth ages 16-17 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone unless apart of a youth group.
Limited dormitory-style shared accommodations
are available at our location in Minitonas. All volunteers requesting
overnight accommodation must provide a valid criminal background check. If arriving the night before your shift, we request that you check-in before 7:00 PM. Do
not book travel until accommodations are approved by the volunteer coordination
team.
