Viewers applaud Facing Darkness documentary

Facing Darkness, which reveals how Samaritan’s Purse stepped up in 2014 to fight the deadly Ebola Virus, has been a hit with Canadians.

Almost 800 people watched the documentary, which was created by Samaritan’s Purse and shown March 30 and April 3 at six Cineplex theaters across the country.

“It was well done and I am so proud to be a supporter of Samaritan’s Purse,” said Deanna Graham, who watched Facing Darkness in Calgary.

The movie focuses on how Samaritan’s Purse provided compassionate medical care, in the name of Jesus, when Ebola swept through Liberia and several other impoverished West African nations. By the time the crisis passed, more than 28,000 people were infected in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. About 11,000 died.

“I was watching it like a movie and forgetting it was a documentary,” said Kim Campbell, who although not a Christian, was moved by the movie’s message. “Facing Darkness presents an amazing opportunity for support from non-Christians like me.”

Two North American medical personnel—Dr. Kent Brantly and hygienist Nancy Writebol—contracted Ebola and part of Facing Darkness explores how they fought to stay alive and how Samaritan’s Purse worked to bring them back to North America for treatment.

“I remember some of the Ebola media coverage in 2014 and didn’t think it was very impactful,” Campbell recalled. “But when you see the movie and see the full impact of Ebola and the medical centers and decontamination suits that doctors and nurses had to wear, it put a very different perspective on it.”
