Join Samaritan’s Purse Canada in Costa Rica to distribute gift-filled shoeboxes to children in need. Operation Christmas Child is a hands-on project that brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world. Since 1993, Samaritan’s Purse has distributed more than 145 million shoebox gifts to children in over 135 countries. In addition to shoebox gifts, children may receive a colorful booklet in their local language, titled The Greatest Gift, which explains the Good News of Jesus Christ. Many children who receive a shoebox gift are also offered the opportunity to participate in a follow-up discipleship program (called The Greatest Journey). This 12-lesson Bible study helps children to know Jesus, follow Him, and share their faith with others.
This team will also have the opportunity to visit and work with the Clean Cook Stoves program and learn how it is helping to prevent respiratory diseases through the use of safe, energy-saving stoves. Many families in rural Costa Rica cook their daily meals indoors over an open fire, and the frequent smoke inhalation can often lead to respiratory disease, particularly among women and children who are exposed to the smoke more often. Clean Cook Stoves provide a safe alternative to open fires by directing the smoke out of the house, consuming less firewood, and keeping the open flame contained within a stove.
Project: Working alongside Samaritan’s Purse staff and our national partner, you will experience the excitement of Operation Christmas Child shoebox distributions and The Greatest Journey program. Participants will also have the chance to assist with children’s ministry and other outreach opportunities in the local community, including participating in the Clean Cook Stoves program. Most importantly, you will be part of offering the greatest gift of all – the story of Jesus Christ and the Good News of salvation available to everyone through faith in Him.
