Dmitro’s Story

At just seven years old, Dmitro* witnessed firsthand what nobody wishes to see in a lifetime—his hometown under attack. In 2022, the whine of bullets and ear-splitting crash of artillery shells invaded his world.

Dmitro’s family fled 1,800 kilometers from Kharkiv, Ukraine, to Koszalin, Poland. They escaped the violence, but trauma traveled with them; Dmitro needed therapy and the healing touch of Jesus after experiencing the horrors of war and leaving home behind.

Shelter from War

In Poland, one of our local Christian partners dispatched a team of child development specialists to help Dmitro and dozens of other Ukrainian children process their pain. They encouraged Dmitro to draw pictures that depicted his sadness. Then, he made art displaying the warmth, safety, and love he enjoys at his new home.

“Despite the trauma he has endured, Dmitro’s creative spirit continues to shine through,” our partner reported. They also provided a home and food for Dmitro and his family, along with medication for his mom, who has diabetes.

“He prays every day for peace”

“During a Sunday School class, Dmitro shared that he now understands the love of Jesus,” our partner added. As war continues to rage in his homeland, “he prays every day for peace.”

Samaritan’s Purse is working with partners worldwide to care for children facing violence, trafficking, and war. In Europe, our teams support dozens of churches and local Christian organizations as they continue to provide housing, food, education, and trauma care for millions of Ukrainian refugees—many of them children.
