José and Vilma's Story

Nine-year-old José* is helping his mom, Vilma, tend precious vegetables around their tiny home in Peru. They see every plant as a gift made possible by someone like you.

For years, their family has suffered amid a growing global hunger crisis. Low income and no farmable land mean they struggle for nutritious food each day. But the gift of seeds, tools, and agriculture training is transforming their situation. With new knowledge and support, José’s family is turning meager resources into powerful hunger fighters. They’ve made recycled containers into mini-gardens growing nutrient-packed cabbages, parsley, spinach, and chard. “I’m very happy my family will have fresh and nutritious vegetables,” Vilma said. Best of all, these gifts are opening doors for their family to hear the Gospel.

Our World Is Facing A “Hunger Catastrophe”

Disruptions in food production are causing prices to skyrocket. More than 800 million people are suffering right now because they don’t have enough nutritious food. Children are getting hit the hardest, with over 45 percent of child deaths linked to malnutrition. Samaritan’s Purse is helping end hunger for families by providing emergency food and the tools and training needed to grow crops and raise livestock.

Much of the world, including Europe, has called Ukraine their bread basket. Hundreds of millions of people rely on its wheat, barley, and sunflower oil, but the war has slashed these exports. Millions are driven toward hunger.

How the Livelihood Program Works.

In 21 countries, Samaritan’s Purse Canada operates livelihoods programs in communities struggling with malnutrition and hunger. We work with local partners and churches to invite families in greatest need. Each project adapts to the community, culture, and climate, but in general …

  • Beneficiaries like José’s family receive hands-on training in natural, inexpensive ways to raise plentiful crops and livestock. This includes protecting soil nutrients and growing complimentary crops.
  • These farmer field schools often happen at a training garden or community field.
  • Beneficiaries receive good tools, seed, livestock, and the other materials to use their new knowledge.
  • After the initial training, our local agronomists make regular visits to give advice and support.
  • Throughout, our teams share values from God’s Word and work with local churches to share the Gospel and host discipleship groups
