International Medical Volunteer Coordinator

Region: Calgary, AB

Samaritan’s Purse is a Christian international relief organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.  Since 1970, Samaritan’s Purse has helped meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Samaritan’s Purse Canada is seeking an International Medical Volunteer Coordinator who is passionate about short-term mission teams and volunteer ministry engagement, to fill a one-year maternity leave position serving with our Programs and Projects (P&PD) team. Reporting to the International Disaster Response Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination, administration, and support of medical volunteers and Post-Resident Program (PRP) doctors serving with World Medical Mission (WMM). This role will work closely with all internal departments involved in the initiation, planning, and implementation of PRP deployments and volunteer medical missions. As part of the P&PD team, this individual helps to promote and facilitate overseas medical mission opportunities to support the ongoing work of the organization and its charitable objects. As an integral member of the P&PD department, this role will help SPC carry out its mission and objectives through participation in daily prayer ministry. The successful candidate will fulfill a full-time position, working from the Calgary office. This position includes benefits of life insurance, medical/dental and short-term/long-term disability, free parking, and 15 days of vacation per year to start.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Coordinate with Samaritan’s Purse International Headquarters (IHQ) staff in the placement of assigned Canadian doctors, specialists, and nurses, providing logistical support for flights and other travel details to assigned medical personnel
  • Working closely with WMM, support and facilitate the deployment of Canadian post-residency candidates, including but not limited to logistics, visa applications, contracts, pre-departure orientation, and post-deployment follow-up
  • Collaborate with IHQ and the Samaritan’s Purse Canada Human Resources team to ensure each PRP doctor/medical volunteer’s onboarding is complete and carried out with professionalism and excellence
  • Provide administrative and coordination support to medical volunteers and PRP doctors serving with WMM, whilst effectively communicating organizational, financial, and other applicable policies and processes
  • Create and implement recruitment strategies and events for medical volunteers for WMM and medical teams
  • Receive all Medical Mission inquiries and information requests, responding in a timely manner and communicating all information and other ministry opportunities accurately and effectively
  • Manage and trace eligible WMM/PRP ministry expenses in a timely manner, ensuring compliance with Samaritan’s Purse Canada, field office, and CRA guidelines
  • Act as a backup to the International Staffing Specialist when needed, particularly with logistical and administrative tasks related to personnel deployment during a Samaritan’s Purse Canada Disaster Assistance Response Team response
  • Maintain relationship connectivity with past WMM volunteers, informing them of current Samaritan’s Purse Canada work and opportunities
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and serving at training, fund-raising, and recruiting events as needed within the P&PD department and other departments as required

Qualifications:

  • Qualified applicants should be committed to Christian values and precepts and be in agreement with the Samaritan’s Purse Statement of Faith
  • Post-secondary education in non-profit studies/ international development or a related area
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in an office administration, travel or medical environment. Direct relief and development experience will be an asset
  • Proficient in bookkeeping methods and internal control practices
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly in Excel
  • Detailed oriented, thorough, and accurate
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information
  • A team player who can build rapport with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Exposure to living and working in a developing country on a short or long term basis is an asset
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or French (speaking and writing) is an asset
  • Able to travel domestically and/or internationally for networking, promotions and team participation (as dictated by world events and/or organizational needs, approx. twice a year)
