Kiran’s Story

When Kiran’s* parents heard the diagnosis, their hearts sank. The complex name for their 12-year-old son’s rare condition could be summed up like this: abnormalities meant blood wasn’t flowing through his heart correctly. To fix it meant open heart surgery.

Kiran’s symptoms had started months earlier at their home in a remote region of Nepal. He woke up with swelling, discomfort, and difficulty breathing, but his parents had no means to seek out medical care. A few days later, Kiran had worsened so much that he needed immediate attention.

When Life-Saving Care is Far Away

Desperate, Kiran’s mom and dad borrowed money from a neighbor to get him to the nearest hospital. But the surgery Kiran really needed was only available in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu—800 mountainous kilometers away.

Their family feared the worst. They were already falling dangerously into debt. How could they pay for their son’s surgery, never mind food and accommodations for an extended stay in Kathmandu?

In the Bible, God says through the prophet Isaiah, “I will make a way in the wilderness” (Isaiah 43:19, ESV). God uses your gifts to “make a way” for children like Kiran to receive the advanced medical care they need.

How this Health Project Works

Through your gifts, Samaritan’s Purse works with a Christian partner in Nepal to overcome all the barriers that keep children from accessing vital healthcare.

  • Transportation is provided to help children and their loved ones make the long and difficult journey from remote villages to Kathmandu.
  • They are hosted at our partner organization’s accessible facility, where comfortable rooms and nutritious food are supplied at no cost to them.
  • Our partner then helps them navigate the complex medical system—accompanying patients to medical appointments and ensuring thorough aftercare.

Such was the case for Kiran, who is now healthy, thriving, and receiving regular follow-up after a successful surgery!
