The sun rises in the village of Bukit Tinggi, Indonesia. Another school day awaits twelve-year-old Amisha* as she stretches her arms and rubs the sleep from her eyes.
She finishes breakfast then brushes her teeth, reminding her two younger brothers to do the same. She stops at her family’s latrine then scrubs her hands with soap and water before dashing to class.
She slips on her mask, grateful that COVID-19 cases are low enough in her area for school to be open. It’s going to be another good day in grade six.
It might come as a surprise that healthy habits like handwashing, latrine use, and brushing teeth are new additions to Amisha’s daily rhythm. But these simple methods of protecting herself and her family from illness are something she learned just recently through a project at her school, made possible by donors like you.
Our local partner conducts health classes in Amisha’s school once every month, instructing students in all they can do to improve their physical and spiritual well-being—from how to use clean water to how to pray to Jesus Christ.
“I thanked them for teaching us important lessons that are very useful for our life,” Amisha shared. Now she is a teacher too; she encourages her brothers to practice healthy habits at home just like she does.
Their family lives in one of the most desperate areas of Indonesia, where most people live on just $2 a day. It simply isn’t enough for parents to provide for their children, which is why this project also helps families grow vegetable gardens and raise pigs and chickens.
The lives of 10,000 children are being impacted through health and hygiene classes and better nutrition.
Just a few years before Amisha was born, this part of Indonesia was rocked by the deadly 2004 Boxing Day earthquake and tsunami, followed just three months later by another devastating earthquake. Though the area is historically Christian, many families mix their faith with traditional beliefs.
Our local partner integrates Scripture into health classes and livelihood training—carefully modeling Christ-like character so all might get a glimpse of His truth and love.
