Cambodian farmer doubles income from crop following training

Chem used to make only $75 in three months. His job? Farming in rural Cambodia, where poverty rates are high, and opportunities for education are nearly non-existent.

Vegetable farming was a year-round battle for Chem. Without good crop yields, the 66-year-old struggled to feed his family and still make a profit.

“I didn’t know that how I planted vegetables needed improvement,” Chem said.

That’s why Samaritan’s Purse-with the prayers and financial support of Canadians like you-is helping equip farmers in rural Cambodia.

When we met Chem, he was the oldest person to join our group training sessions. He paid close attention as he learned how different  farming techniques could improve his vegetable crop. From tilling land, to irrigation, to weeding, to pricing his product, Chem gained the knowledge needed to help his business thrive.

“I am very pleased with the crop yield this year,” he said. “I can make a lot of money with my home garden. I really love these farming techniques.”

Chem’s crop income has doubled because of the knowledge he gained and put to practice. Now, Chem is training other farmers in his village, so they can improve their farming techniques, too. He hopes to see more children in his community attend school with their families’ increased income.

Please join us. Countless more farmers like Chem are struggling, and you can help provide the resources they need to succeed.

As we serve rural communities in need, our prayer echoes King David’s psalm, that “those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them” (Psalm 126:6, NIV).

And as we serve in Jesus’ Name, we also pray that many will come to know the Lord, who “satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things” (Psalm 107:9, NIV).
