Canadians are supporting aid for Syrian refugees

September, 2013—More than  three million people have been forced to run for their lives since civil war broke out in Syria three years ago.

Thanks to Canadians’ generous donations and prayers, our courageous partner churches are helping thousands of families in crisis—some of whom haven’t been able to leave Syria. They are bringing   food, clothing, baby items, bedding, medicine and other emergency assistance based on each family’s unique needs.

“The need is increasing greatly the longer the crisis becomes,” said one of our church partners, who opened the door one day to find the street flooded with those needing help. “But we are determined to work to provide assistance to the needy people and relieve their burdens in this difficult crisis.”

Samaritan’s Purse is also helping refugees in Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. “We offer aid to all the society and from all backgrounds without discrimination,” said our partner. “We realize as a church that we are building bridges with many kinds of people.”

Examples of the families helped include:

  • A married couple, an aunt, and five children who have rented an unfinished bare cement apartment. One child, about 12 years old, has a severe mental handicap. Their home is completely empty. Samaritan’s Purse provided them with mattresses, pillows, blankets, floor mats, a gas burner stove, a propane tank with fittings and an electric fan. They will also receive monthly food aid.
  • A man, his two wives, and six children who live in an empty two-room apartment on the edge of town. Their toddler and nursing baby are weak and both have colds from sleeping on bare cement for at least a week. They too will receive full help.
  • A man whose legs are in casts as a result of the war. He needs physiotherapy but can’t afford it. Our church partner has a physiotherapist  to help and will also send the man for wheelchair fitting. His face brightens with hope. Otherwise, the only aid his family required from Samaritan’s Purse was a fan and stove.

From the beginning, Samaritan’s Purse has been supporting local ministry partners as they provide physical and spiritual help to suffering families in Jesus’ name. The needs of Syrians are ongoing as the civil war continues, and Samaritan’s Purse has been blessed with unique opportunities to respond. Please give generously today.
