Guinea-Bissau school nearly destroyed by storm

The intensity of a storm that badly damaged a school is no match for the power of God working through His people.

A recent storm in the African nation of Guinea-Bissau almost destroyed a local school, but now Samaritan’s Purse Canada is working with local church members to rebuild the school that not only educates children during the week but serves as a Sunday school and church on weekends.

“Thank you so much for time and care to come here and help us,” says pastor Alberto Sa, the school’s founder and a local evangelist. “We have 250 students and 80 per cent are from an animist background, about 10 per cent are Muslim, and 10 per cent are Christian. But many of these children now attend our Sunday school program every week—about 140 kids.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for us to share Jesus. The damage from the storm made it impossible for us to use the school, so we are very thankful to have help repairing it.”

Pastor Alberto has also served as resource coordinator with Operation Christmas Child in Guinea-Bissau since 2011, helping Samaritan’s Purse to distribute gift-filled shoeboxes to needy children.

About 160 people attend his church’s regular Sunday service—the majority being children. The church also has four other congregations in the area.

“We want to help build the Lord’s Kingdom, and Samaritan’s Purse has been a great friend and partner to us in doing that,” Pastor Alberto says.

Rebuilding the school is enabling Samaritan’s Purse to help meet the local church’s needs while also helping to meet some of Guinea-Bissau’s many educational needs. You can partner in projects like this by donating to Disaster Relief today.
