Samaritan’s Purse is responding to the 8.1 magnitude Chiapas earthquake that killed 98 people on September 7. Within Chiapas, an estimated 1.5 million people were affected by the earthquake, with 41,000 homes damaged. The Secretariat of the Interior declared a state of emergency for 122 municipalities in Chiapas, and the Mexican Army was deployed to aid in disaster relief.
Samaritan’s Purse will be assisting families in the area with home reconstruction. We will also be helping repair the Casa Hogar children’s home, which needs some serious structural repairs in order to maintain the safety of the 90 children who are cared for there as well as the countless families and community members who pass through the home as visitors.
““The situation right now is that many people still need help,” reports Carolina Zuleta-Sanchez, project manager for Latin America and Caribbean during a recent post-earthquake visit to Chiapas. “There is an urgent need to rebuild homes as the rainy season is upon them, and a lot of people have been left with severely damaged roofs and cracks on their walls. By supporting Casa Hogar and helping them to complete their building repairs, we are giving them the capacity to respond immediately to bring hope and help to their community,” reports Carolina Zuleta-Sanchez, project manager for Latin America and Caribbean.
