Hurricane Harvey response updates: Volunteers, chaplains expand work across coastal Texas

UPDATE: We are working in five locations across flooded Texas, and our disaster relief teams have received more than 2,800 homeowner requests for help. More than 3,800 volunteers have joined our relief efforts, and 193 people have made decisions to follow Jesus Christ. The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team has grown to 112 chaplains who have prayed with almost 6,000 people in communities along the Texas coast.

Samaritan’s Purse volunteers are working in Houston and Pearland (just south of Houston), and in the communities of Rockport/PortlandVictoria, and Santa Fe. A disaster relief unit is parked at each of our five bases.

The needs are great, and we will continue to serve homeowners in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ for months to come. Please pray as our staff and volunteers help homeowners in Jesus’ Name.

“The flooding was just horrendous in southeast Texas,” said Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham. “People have lost their homes, and some have lost everything. We want to go and we want to be there in their time of need, helping them in the Name of Jesus Christ put their lives back together again.”

When Hurricane Harvey made landfall Aug. 25, it was the largest storm to strike the United States in over a decade. Ever ready to respond, Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief Units were rolling toward coastal Texas the same day the Category 4 storm came ashore. Over the next several days, Harvey, then a tropical storm, dropped unprecedented amounts of rain in Houston and surrounding areas.

Cedar Bayou, about 30 miles east of downtown, received a total of 51.88 inches of rain, a record-breaking total for the continental United States. The resulting floodwaters were overwhelming.

Working from five key locations spanning from Houston to Rockport/Portland, our staff and volunteers will be clearing trees from homes and yards, tarping roofs, and performing mud-outs for months to come.

Most important, they demonstrate the love of God and share the hope of Christ with flood-weary homeowners.

Please join us in praying for the people of Texas and for our volunteer teams as they help communities devastated by catastrophic flooding.

Pray that God would provide an army of willing Christian men and women for the enormous work ahead. Please also pray that many Texans would place their hope and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
