Bringing hope to Nepal flood survivors

By Smriti Kamar, information officer for Samaritan’s Purse in Nepal

Our team recently had the chance to meet Dev Kumari and her husband. Their house was destroyed in the Nepal floods. Kumari is 66 years old and all her children have moved away from her village.

In the middle of the night on Friday, Kumari and her husband awoke to find that the water levels in their home had risen to their knees. Their bed was floating on the water. With the current moving so quickly, Kumari and her husband did not have the strength to make their way out of their home.

For more than an hour and a half, they held onto the side of their home until the current slowed and the waters subsided. Youth from the village eventually came and rescued the couple.

Although some food was provided by the government, they did not receive clean drinking water. Kumari was forced to drink water from the tap, which was not safe.

Samaritan’s Purse has now provided clean drinking water along with water purifying tablets to Kumari and her community. This will provide households life-saving hydration for the coming weeks while the community does what it can to get back on its feet.

In areas hardest hit by the floods, Samaritan’s Purse is also working with local partners to host medical clinics. We are working in vulnerable communities and continuing to assess other ways to meet urgent needs.
