Seventy-eight-year-old Francisco Ayala has been suffering through painful and debilitating stomach ailments living alone in his small village in El Salvador.
“This was very difficult for him, because he lives alone and had no one to take care of him in the difficult days of the illness,” says Ken Morrill, a Samaritans Purse partner and program manager in El Salvador. “Recently, some neighbors invited him to a meeting to receive a filter completely free and this filled him with joy because he knew that his health problems were caused by the unsafe water he was drinking.”
Nine months after Francisco received his Samaritan’s Purse BioSand Filter, he says that his life changed.
Although Francisco still has to travel a kilometer every day collect water from a river, he says he now does it with great joy because he can purify it.
“This dirty water was killing me, but now that I have my filter and I am healthy, this water is life for me,” says Francisco.
More than three-quarters of all fatalities caused by diarrheal disease result from drinking dirty water, according to the World Health Organization.
Waterborne illness also exacerbates the effects of malnourishment, threatening the lives of children in particular.
By partnering with Samaritan’s Purse to create access to clean water, you are helping prevent needless suffering and death.
There are still 1.8 billion people using a source of drinking water that is contaminated putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.
Annually, safer water could prevent:
• 1.4 million child deaths from diarrhea
• 500,000 deaths from malaria
• 860,000 child deaths from malnutrition
• 280,000 deaths from drowning
Your gift will help those who have no choice but dirty water, like those living in El Salvador, and will be used to provide a variety of water solutions and toilet facilities. Your gift will also train local church leaders to educate communities in good hygiene and sanitation practices, whilst sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.
