Samaritan's Purse Teams

Medical & Dental

Through Samaritan’s Purse Teams, physicians, nurses, dentists, and optometrists have the opportunity to join short-term trips in developing countries. These professionals enable the team to set up medical, dental and eye clinic ministries in needy communities. Each trip is an opportunity for first-hand experience working in a different culture, and sharing the Good News of Christ through the provision of basic health care.

“I find it fantastic to have an opportunity to work with a team, and be used in a way where you can see the Lord working all around you,” says Dr. Neil Hilliard, a Canadian who has served on Samaritan’s Purse short-term teams in Central and South America.

Samaritan's Purse Teams is looking for professionals in the following areas:

Doctors

Physicians go out with our Missions and Youth Teams, and set up medical clinics to which the community is invited. These clinics assist families in communities where often they are unable to visit a doctor.

Nurses

Nurses work with our Missions and Youth Teams to set up medical clinics in communities that the visit. In addition, nurses are responsible for dealing with any ailments that the Team may experience.

Dentists

Dentists work alongside our Missions Teams to provided much-needed dental care to people who cannot afford it otherwise.

Optometrists

Working with Missions and Youth Teams, optometrists run eye clinics where the community is invited to come, have their eyes tested, and be fitted with eyeglasses. This wonderful ministry provides thousands of pairs of glasses to needy individuals each year, often giving people the ability to see properly for the first time in many years.

Many countries where we minister require licensed optometrists to fit people with eyewear, but we also have opportunities for volunteers trained in fitting people with glasses.

What to Expect

Our Teams

Samaritan’s Purse teams usually involve 25 – 30 people participating in a 10 – 14 day international trip to a developing country. The team ministers to communities through community outreach, medical clinics, dentistry clinics, eye clinics, and construction projects.

Every team has an experienced team leader trained by Samaritan’s Purse to provide the group’s direction and handle logistics. Accommodations and available amenities vary along with each trip destination, and each team must be prepared to work in differing conditions and climate.

Field Medical Clinic

Our medical clinics are temporary care facilities: Diagnosis and prescription is done based on the basic exam and interview, and clinics can either be set up in an existing structure or a temporary facility.

The main purpose of the clinic is to serve as an avenue for ministry, partnering with local Christians to demonstrate God’s love to the community through basic medical care.

The team’s medical personnel are in place to operate the health clinic, and ensure the safety of the team members. The health of the individuals participating on the trip is a top priority for medical personnel.

Clinic outreaches are mentally, spiritually, and physically challenging for a team because of the circumstances and great needs of a community, as well as the types and stage of illness seen at clinics.

Field Eye Clinic

Samaritan’s Purse eye clinics are an exceptional ministry to demonstrate God’s love and mercy by giving sight to the sightless. The practical purpose of the clinic is to provide eyeglasses to those who are in need of them but cannot afford the expense. This involves determining a person’s eye prescription, some diagnosis of eye disease (with minimal treatment) and frame adjustment and repair when needed. Some basic skills will be taught to other team members in order to effectively help the clinic leader be as efficient and effective as possible.

Dental Clinic

Samaritan’s Purse provides a self contained dental clinic that will allow dentists to bring dental care to areas where people may never have seen a dentist. The clinic is a tremendous opportunity to show compassion and hope to those who may be suffering.
