Our Work

Tuberculosis Care

Recent media coverage has focused international attention on the story of a young, globe-trotting American lawyer with a dangerous and drug-resistant form of tuberculosis. Tuberculosis - a bacterial infection that usually attacks the lungs - is spread through the air and was once the leading cause of the death in the United States.

Tuberculosis is not common in the developed world, and is treated quickly. However, the disease runs rampant in many parts of the developing world. Antibiotic treatments for the disease have led to the emergence of several drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis, which are extremely difficult to treat and are often fatal.

Samaritan’s Purse is working to combat drug-resistant tuberculosis in the developing world through our support of the Annoor Sanatorium in Mafraq, Jordan. The sanatorium is one of a small number of medical facilities around the world authorized by the World Health Organization to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis patients.

The Annoor Sanatorium is located on the edge of the desert in north-central Jordan and treats mainly nomadic Bedouin who travel hundreds of kilometres to the hospital. Through the ongoing work of the doctors and nurses at Annoor Sanatorium, medicine to treat deadly infections is being provided to one of the world’s most isolated people groups.
