Pray for Sudan
Historic elections under way
Sudan is a country with a long history of violence, but it is a country that currently has peace following a horrible civil war that saw more than two million people killed. Five years ago the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed to end the civil war and was tied to a promise that the people of southern Sudan would be allowed to participate in national elections in April 2010 and vote for independence in 2011.
Prayer is paving the way for Sudan's first democratic elections in 24 years. Thousands of Christians are gathering in homes, churches, and public outdoor settings to fast and pray for peaceful elections.
"If you want to make an impact, pray!" said Pastor James, church leader in Khartoum, who has been working with other church leaders in Sudan to continue a nationwide prayer campaign. "When you pray, things change."
- Pray for fair and peaceful elections, and a smooth transition when results are announced on April 18
- Pray that tensions will ease between tribal groups in the south
- Pray that more young people will join the prayer effort and become active in local churches
- Pray for continued unity between churches throughout the nation
"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." Romans 12:12
Samaritan’s Purse knows firsthand what prayer can do in Sudan. Since 1997 we have partnered with and prayed for the people of Sudan. We have assisted in implementing agricultural, education and water and sanitation projects. Through our Sudanese Physician Reintegration Program, conducted together with the University of Calgary, there are 11 additional doctors seeing patients in clinics across the country. We are also beginning the construction of three primary healthcare units in remote communities and a maternity/pediatric ward in one of the hospitals in South Sudan in partnership with the Canadian International Development Agency.
“Now is the time for prayer warriors to lift up our fellow believers in Sudan,” said Franklin Graham, the president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse Canada. “Church leaders in Sudan have asked me to call on Christians around the world to participate.”
Free and fair elections could help lay a foundation for lasting peace in Sudan. However, if violence erupts it could start a chain reaction that plunges the nation back into civil war. Please join with Samaritan’s Purse and millions across the globe in praying for Sudan.
