ORPHAN CARE: Through projects and partners of Samaritan’s Purse, children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS are receiving care.

Our Work

HIV/AIDS Orphan Care

As the HIV/AIDS epidemic ravages the continent of Africa, one can scarcely find a family or community that has not experienced overwhelming pain and loss. In the country of South Africa, nearly 1,000 people die from AIDS every day. Sadly, it’s the country’s children who suffer the most as thousands are orphaned and many more are left in a state of desperation and vulnerability.

When nine-year-old Nontsi’s mother contracted HIV/AIDS, the young girl watched as the virus progressively weakened her mother’s body. Her closest relatives refused to get involved in the situation, but one family member, Tim, was willing to reject the social stigma that AIDS carries and lovingly care for Nontsi’s dying mother. When Nontsi’s mother eventually passed, Nontsi was devastated, but it was a relief when Tim took her into his care.

The two live in a small three-room shack in an informal settlement. Permanent employment is difficult to find, so Tim works a number of odd jobs that earn him only enough money to put food on the table.

Through a program run by a partner of Samaritan’s Purse, Tim and Nontsi receive food packages containing dry goods and food vouchers that can be used to purchase perishable items from the local supermarket. Tim and Nontsi now have extra money that can be used to meet other important needs such as school clothing for Nontsi.

The program works with local churches to help alleviate suffering and provide care and support for orphans, vulnerable children, and the individuals who care for them. With the support of Samaritan’s Purse, churches are able to provide for the emotional, spiritual, and physical needs of communities throughout South Africa, restoring hope and joy for children like Nontsi.
